A standard for constrained devices

The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) finalized SP 800-232 in August 2025. The publication specifies Ascon-based algorithms for constrained devices, including IoT sensors, RFID tags and medical implants. NIST describes lightweight cryptography as protection built for systems where conventional algorithms may be too demanding. The standard gives device makers a published reference for implementing encryption, hashing and related functions in small hardware.

From a 2023 selection to an implementable standard

NIST selected the Ascon family in 2023 after a public standardization process. The final standard builds on that decision and documents the algorithms for practical use. Constrained devices often handle sensitive data while offering limited memory, computing power and battery life. NIST’s announcement focuses on that gap: security requirements do not disappear when a device is small, so the algorithms must fit the device rather than the other way around.
